Mac health monitor

Why is my Mac slow, hot or draining? Ask the creature.

Bytebud is a Mac health monitor that lives in your menu bar. It reads the same four signals macOS uses to judge itself, turns them into one face, and when something is wrong it names the app behind it and offers the fix.

Sick

Why is my Mac slow?

What's happening
Usually memory. macOS reports memory pressure as normal, warning or critical. At critical, it is swapping memory to disk and every app waits.
When Bytebud reacts
Bytebud turns Sick when memory pressure stays critical for two minutes, and names the app using the most memory.
The fix
Quit or restart that app, after you confirm. Apps that keep growing for hours are flagged as leaks.

Sweaty

Why is my Mac hot and loud?

What's happening
Something is keeping the CPU busy. macOS raises its thermal state and slows the chip to cool down, which feels like lag and sounds like fans.
When Bytebud reacts
Bytebud turns Sweaty when the thermal state is serious, or CPU stays over 85% for five minutes, and shows the three busiest apps.
The fix
Quit one of them, or tell Bytebud a build or export is allowed to be busy for a while.

Sleepy

What is draining my MacBook battery?

What's happening
On battery, a few apps usually use most of the power. Activity Monitor's Energy tab shows a score; Bytebud ranks apps by real watts.
When Bytebud reacts
Bytebud turns Sleepy under 20% when the Mac isn't charging, and points at the app drawing the most power.
The fix
Plug in, turn on Low Power Mode, or quit the app draining you.

Stuffed

Why is my Mac's disk full?

What's happening
With little free space, macOS can't swap, update or save comfortably. The usual culprits are the Trash, Downloads and developer caches.
When Bytebud reacts
Bytebud turns Stuffed when the startup disk has under 10% free, and shows what the Trash, Downloads and developer leftovers take.
The fix
Empty the Trash on confirm, or run the clean-up command it shows for each cache. Bytebud never deletes files on its own.

Why not just Activity Monitor?

Activity Monitor answers “what is running”, and only while it's open. Bytebud answers “is anything wrong, and what caused it” all day from the menu bar, at 0.17% CPU and 17 MB of memory, and stays quiet while you're on a call.
